Paris…the City of Lights. Millions of tourists each year are dazzled by the charm of its buildings, the wealth of its monuments and museums. Yet one of the capital’s most impressive features is invisible at street level: its rooftops. From Notre Dame to the Holy Trinity Cathedral, the roofs of Paris, unrivalled in beauty and ingenuity, are a concentrate of pure technology. Notre Dame’s iconic frame has been holding up 210 tons of lead for over 800 years. The dome of the Invalides is covered by 500,000 gold leaves, each one placed by hand a dizzying 100 meters above the ground. The spectacular glass roof of the Grand Palais would never have seen the light of day without the invention of steel. And most recently, the Holy Trinity Cathedral’s five gorgeous cupolas weigh 8 tons instead of 42, thanks to modern technology…. A soaring view of these national treasures that make the Paris skyline famous the world over.
